In the beginning weeks of 2021, Powell’s Books, the legendary bookstore in Portland, announced its decision to keep Andy Ngo’s book “Unmasked” off their shelves. Powell’s Books allows Adolf Hitler’s, “Mein Kampf” written in the original German. The Portland bookstore apparently finding the genocidal, maniacal dictator more benign than the conservative, American journalist.
Internationally renowned publisher Simon & Schuster extended its own authoritarian arm to squash Republican Senator Josh Hawley’s upcoming book, “Tyranny of Big Tech”, (an apt title) quickly in the aftermath of the Capitol Hill “siege”. Publishers like Simon & Schuster are seizing the opportunity to label political opponents as “dangerous” in order to avoid providing services — services they know will hurt their colleagues’ credibility in Silicon Valley while enriching one Republican, conservative Senator. As a couple thousand hoodlums stormed the Capitol, Liberal institutions and corporations such as Harvard University and Simon & Schuster quickly began searching for ways to leverage the moment– and their power –against political opponents. Again, leftwing media mislabels those in alignment with the Trump supporters that rushed the Capitol on January 6th as “threatening” to the “welfare of society”; Democrats demonize those who stormed the Capitol, and lump them with all Trump supporters and all Republicans.
If 2,000 Muslims or Catholics did something similar, we would be told ad nauseam by the media, not to lump all Muslims together; don’t punish the many for the mistakes of the few. That was the logic applied to the BLM/Antifa protests and riots of 2020. We were told not to paint with broad strokes and assume that every protester was there for the right reasons; even though the “peaceful protests” inevitably evolved into small-business bonfires, and cops were openly killed as day descended to night.
With Powell’s Books and national publishers such as Simon & Schuster taking these measures against American journalists and Senators alike, I fear the country has begun to blindly tread the murky waters of authoritarianism, or fallen in the quicksand of totalitarianism. Democrats have naturally given birth to their own Mccarthy era, and it cannot end well for the country.
To the amateur historian, these extreme measures recently taken are eerily reminiscent to Mao’s China, Stalin’s Russia and Hitler’s Nazi Germany. If overreaching censorship doesn’t seize your attention, then consider the diatribe being echoed by the megaphone of the leftwing, mainstream media, as they weaponize social media to purge conservatives from various platforms. That is what I poorly attempted to outline in my article, “The Integrity of the Press”.
We desperately need classic Liberals, Libertarians and moderate Democrats to challenge the media and our elected leaders. If they actually prize the First Amendment over their party or their voting bloc, then they will begin to grow a spine and speak against political censorship. Considering the countless times we heard Donald Trump mislabeled as a “fascist dictator” throughout his four years in office, he didn’t even come close to this authoritarian mace that is being swung at the symbolic face of his most loyal supporters.
When Jack Dorsey decides he has more authority than the sitting President of the United States of America, it needs to be condemned by the public. When Simon & Schuster and Powell’s Books cancel Senators and journalists, it needs to be condemned by the public. When Katie Couric says Trump supporters need to be “deprogrammed” and “reeducated”, it needs to be condemned and corrected by the public. Couric literally said, “the question is how are we going to really almost deprogram these people who have signed up for the cult of Trump.” Lady, if there’s a Trump cult, then there’s an Obama cult as well, and that would make you one of its most zealous advocates. On that note: if Trump and Obama have a cult-like following, (admittedly, they do) then there must be a Clinton cult, and a Reagan cult, and a JFK cult, and a FDR cult, and a Teddy Roosevelt cult, and a Lincoln cult. . .It’s called American politics. There has always been a cult-like, religious fervor surrounding politics in this country since its founding. Only in recent years, the opposing side blurts out, “cult” as a pejorative whenever their candidate isn’t as popular or doesn’t garner the same crowd size as the opponent. “Objective journalists” like Katie Couric were declaring Obama as the long awaited “messiah” in 2008, but I didn’t see many Republicans smearing Oprah Winfrey or Barbara Walters for worshipping Barack Obama.
When the Washington Post calls for Joe Biden to leverage the FCC against Fox News, it needs to be condemned by the public. When CNN contacted six separate cable carriers to eliminate conservative news, it should have been heavily condemned by the public. When Alex Stamos called for all Republicans to be removed from Facebook during his appearance on CNN, it should have been completely condemned by the host Brian Stelter and the entire American public. That is, if people like Stelter actually favor living in a free society that would encourage open and honest debate rather than stifle, quell and silence it. This sort of “blacklisting” has become a lazy form of virtue signaling for the radical Left. A brief examination of history will prove the potential consequence when the totalitarian tactics of the Democrats playbook are fully implemented. A playbook authored by Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin, revised by Adolf Hitler; It features an introduction by Joseph Stalin, a forward by Mao Ze Dong and an epilogue by Saul Alinsky. The same playbook has been used by every totalitarian regime or dictatorship since Lenin and the Bolsheviks overthrew Russia. From Lenin, to Hitler, to Mussolini and Mao, to Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein and Xi Jinping. The names of the players may change but the strategy behind the game stays the same. Stifle free speech, burn the books, weaponize the press and private sector to cancel-out any dissidents.
If we do not vociferously condemn these actions and absurdities before it’s too late, then we can soon just swap “Orwellian” for “reality”. And here he is, the Big Brother of Oceania, fast approaching the time-warp of 2021. . .
“Every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” –George Orwell, “Nineteen Eighty-Four”
